We’ve all done it; used caffeine or a sugary drink to power through a deadline at work or just make it through the afternoon. And then we are hit with the jitters and fatigue of the dreaded crash.
Was it worth it? A more natural approach to energy may be the way to go.
On the Oct. 25 episode of the Res-Q Healthline Show on WAEB, host Bobby Gunther Walsh and Dr. Jeffery Shapiro discussed ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, the body’s natural source of energy. Shapiro stressed that Res-Q Orosine, which contains the plant-based ingredients inosine and magnesium orotate, naturally supports ATP and cellular energy, rather that the “fake energy” of caffeine or sugar.
ATP: Where Energy Comes From
Gunther: If you're tired all the time, or even just tired because of a long day, instead of drinking the energy drinks and all the chemicals, feed your body naturally.
Shapiro: "Everyone out there needs more energy. Though, we have to understand what creates sustainable energy that is there when your body needs it.
"We're gonna talk about the difference between caffeine and energy drinks, which are not sustainable energy. They’re not real energy.
"Cellular energy is energy that is sustainable. ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the energy currency of our cells. It's the fuel, it's the gasoline for the engine. ATP is the energy packet molecule for every cell in the human body. So that's going to ignite DNA synthesis, muscular contraction, neurological transmissions of our neurotransmitters. It's energy that is required for every cell in the body to do what it has to do.

Dr. Jeffery Shapiro
"ATP is produced by breaking down nutrients from foods we eat like glucose from sugar, protein from meats, or fats from carbohydrates. But unfortunately, as we get older our body doesn’t build up ATP from the food sources as efficiently. So, we need to enhance the availability of that energy molecule, not from food, but from natural supplements."
Orosine Can Help Drive Your Cellular Engine
Gunther: So Res-Q Orosine has inosine and magnesium orotate that are basically the building blocks to ATP. That's how you get the energy, the real energy boost that you want.
Shapiro: "Orisine is a natural supplement that creates energy within the cell. It's cellular energy, so that's gonna give you the energy that you need on a burst, but it's also going to give you the ability to reserve that energy moving forward.
"Taking Orosine, which includes inosine and magnesium orotate, you will have a much better energy reserve. Your fuel tank will be heightened to a higher level, plus it's gonna act as an efficiency molecule within the cell.
"This is something that will naturally boost the levels of your ATP at the cellular level. This is not transient. This is not like caffeine. This is not short-lived energy drinks. This is cellular energy."
Fake Energy: The Sugar Crash
Gunther: If you take sugar, it gives you a temporary energy boost, and then a crash. So, it's actually having it's the opposite effect of what you really want. Talk to me about the dips that sugar causes in people.
Shapiro: "Everybody knows that sugar is an energy booster. However, sugar provides a very rapid, unsustainable energy boost. The sugar crash happens physiologically in response to the high blood sugar that you've just put in your blood. Your body says, 'God, that's a high level of sugar. I gotta get that out of my body and into my cells.'
"You get a large secretion of insulin by the pancreas that transfers the sugar in your blood to your cells, which is your temporary unsustainable energy. Then you get a sugar crash after that high insulin surge, and your blood sugar drops.

"Some common symptoms that you may feel afterwards are fatigue, tiredness, headaches, dizziness, sweating, and sometimes it even activates a secondary increase in hunger. You’re actually activating your sympathetic nervous system, which is the flight or fight response. It is not sustainable and it is not activating ATP at the cellular level."
Fictitious Energy: Caffeine a Borrowed High of Energy

Gunther: I'm not a big caffeine drinker, but there's a lot of kids I work with here, and they swig those red bulls like nothing. Is there, just like with sugar, a crash from caffeine?
Shapiro: "Caffeine does not provide energy to your cells. Instead, what it does is it tricks your brain into thinking you’re not tired. It does that by blocking the receptors for adenosine, the natural chemical in your brain that promotes sleepiness.
"If you block those pathways of adenosine in your brain, you will feel more alert and more energy. It's not a sustainable energy because after you block these receptors, your body compensates by creating even more adenosine receptors. When the caffeine wears off, you have a crash.
"Everyone knows when you have a cup of coffee, two hours later, you need another cup of coffee. Two hours later you need another cup of coffee. This is not cellular energy. This is just fictitious energy."
