We all know how important exercise is for our health. It plays a major role in weight control, reduces the risk of chronic diseases, strengthens our heart, bones, and muscles, improves mood and energy levels, and gives us a better night’s sleep.

“People that exercise on a regular basis tend to get sick less, sleep better, and have a better digestive system,” said Dr. Eric Lebby. “You can’t be a couch potato. I often say that sitting is the new smoking. That’s how bad being sedentary can be for your health.”

Though, one thing that isn’t as clear, is how much exercise we need to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The American Heart Association recommends that adults get a minimum of 150-300 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise per week. That breaks down to 30 minutes, five times a week. The recommendation for more intense, vigorous activity is 75-150 minutes a week.

So, what’s the difference between moderate and vigorous exercise?

Moderate-intensity aerobic exercise consists of activities where you are still able to talk while doing them:

  • brisk walking (at least 2.5 miles per hour)
  • water aerobics
  • dancing (ballroom or social)
  • gardening
  • tennis (doubles)
  • biking slower than 10 miles per hour

Vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise is when you are unable to speak more than a few words at a time during the activity:

  • hiking uphill or with a heavy backpack
  • running
  • swimming laps
  • vigorous dancing
  • heavy yardwork such as continuous digging or hoeing
  • tennis (singles)
  • cycling 10 miles per hour or faster
  • jumping rope

It’s also recommended to do anerobic muscle/strength training exercises at least two days a week. These should work all major muscle groups, including legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms.

Now we know how much activity we should be getting per week. The next, most important, step is doing the actual exercise.

“As doctors, we talk about exercise and how important it is, but we know the hardest part is just getting started, getting that jumpstart,” said Lebby.

Motivation Tips

  • Fit it in anywhere. You don’t have to do a big workout all at once. You can break exercise into smaller chunks. Take a 10-minute walk during your lunch break, walk instead of driving to close locations, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Then do 20 minutes on the treadmill.
  • Make it convenient. Try to insert exercise into regular activities. Set up a treadmill or bike in the living room and exercise while watching TV. Take a jog with your dog instead of just a walk.
  • Move more, don’t sit. Any activity is better than none. Try to get up and walk around every hour.
  • Set a reachable goal for today. If you can’t find time to exercise today, don’t stress about it. You can pick up again tomorrow.
